How they work

After a startup’s initial investment, Evil Martians embed and lead small cross-functional teams (typically 2–5 engineers, designers, and account managers) to help scale the product. Teams can include people from the client’s side.

You will speak directly with a client (often the CTO). On most projects the team holds a weekly call and posts daily text statuses.

They are a remote-first company that hires globally. To help team members maintain a healthy work–life balance, the company expects a minimum three-hour daily overlap with the Pacific Time zone because most clients are there. Aside from this requirement, the team relies on an async work style to enable deep, uninterrupted focus.

Engineers are expected to take product ownership: focus on real business results, question assumptions, propose improvements, and work beyond individual tickets. Team members get a large amount of control over their projects and can see the results of their work.

Evil Martians maintain 100+ open source projects (some examples include PostCSS, Browserslist, and AnyCable) and support team members’ open source work. Some clients are open source projects as well.

The company practices financial transparency: it publishes requirements for salary growth, discusses company financial results as a team each month, and runs profit-sharing and employee stock option programs.

There are offices in San Francisco, Lisbon, and Osaka, and the company can support relocation to Portugal after a probationary period.
