Linear
Jobs at Linear and what it’s like to work there.
Linear builds project and issue-tracking software for product teams, with a strong focus on speed, clarity, and craftsmanship.
Mission
The product development system for teams and agents.
Linear is remote-first and built around trust and autonomy. Teams keep meetings to a minimum, communicate directly, and protect uninterrupted focus. The company says builders get freedom of place and rhythm, with work arranged so people can plan their days around their lives.
Teams are small, usually two to four people, and assemble around a project before disbanding when the work is done. Project leads rotate, often engineers or designers, and Linear prefers one product team and one roadmap rather than extra layers of process. It does not use OKRs or run A/B tests.
Specs stay short and focused on context and intent. Work ships behind feature flags to internal users first, then to select customers when that helps. Weekly written updates post to Slack so progress stays visible without meetings.
Quality is treated as a habit. Linear keeps a zero-bugs policy, reviews a weekly bug dashboard, and uses Quality Wednesdays and feature roasts to sharpen judgment.
The team stays close to customers through Customer Requests, triage, and a goalie rotation for inbound work. Connection rituals include monthly all-hands, Hack Week, coffee chats, and an annual company offsite.
Applications go through the Careers page, and Linear’s Talent team reviews every application. The company also welcomes referrals and proactive outreach.
If there seems to be a fit, the process usually starts with a conversation with a recruiter, hiring manager, or both. Linear discusses compensation on the first recruiter call and uses early conversations to understand your background, what you’re looking for, and whether the role fits on both sides.
Next come a small number of focused team interviews. The exact questions vary by role, but Linear is looking for craft, judgment, ownership, clarity, and fit with a small-team, low-overhead way of working. It values how you think through real problems more than polished answers.
The final stage is a paid 2-5 day work trial. Candidates work with a small project team, get access to tools such as Slack, Notion, Linear, Pitch, GitHub, and Figma, and do a real project. The trial typically includes a kickoff, a candidate-led check-in, and a final presentation.
After the trial, each evaluator submits feedback independently before a live debrief. Linear starts with a blind vote, prefers unanimous decisions, and has the hiring manager make the final call. The company says most processes involve three to four interviews before the trial and are communicated directly throughout, with feedback if it does not move forward.
