Obsidian
Jobs at Obsidian and what it’s like to work there.
Obsidian is a proprietary note-taking and personal knowledge base application that works on local Markdown files and emphasizes privacy, portability, extensibility, and user-funded independence.
Mission
Sharpen your thinking.
Obsidian's work is guided by five principles — Yours, Durable, Private, Malleable, and Independent — which shape product choices and priorities. The team focuses on giving users control over their information and on building tools that are adaptable and long-lived; see About Obsidian.
The app is built around local, plain-text Markdown files to ensure portability and avoid vendor lock-in. Online services are optional: Obsidian Sync synchronizes data across devices with end-to-end encryption, and Obsidian Publish provides web hosting for content users choose to share. Details about file formats and license are in the license overview.
Obsidian is intentionally extensible. It supports community plugins and themes and provides developer documentation so users and third-party developers can tailor the app; see the plugin directory and developer docs. The company also maintains community channels for user collaboration and support, listed on the community page.
The product is built by a small, independent team that is 100% supported by its users rather than venture capital. That funding model influences decisions to prioritize user control, longevity of files, and privacy over investor-driven growth.
